It’s Always Been Always

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre

3 May - 3 August 2025

It’s Always Been Always centres the voices of Blak women, celebrating their powerful connections to Country, Community, and Culture.

Featuring newly commissioned and existing works by Wendy Hubert (Yindjibarndi – Juluwarlu Art Group), Harriette Bryant (Pitjantjatjara – Mimili Maku Arts), Kaylene Whiskey & the Iwantja Young Women’s Film Project (Yankunytjatjara – Iwantja Arts), Jazz Money (Wiradjuri and Irish), Yabini Kickett (Bibulmun/Noongar), and Amanda Bell (Badimia and Yued Noongar).

This show seeks to amplify the vital roles of Blak women as custodians, connectors, and community leaders. Through their art, these women share stories of resilience, kinship, and the unique ways they sustain and nurture their relationships with land, family, and identity.

Now Touring WA with Art On The Move, originally presented at Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre, the exhibition is shaped by a guiding proposition: that sovereignty is not abstract, but lived — carried through language, kinship, care, joy, rage, and cultural nurture. The works move between personal testimony and collective memory, speaking from diverse Nations and geographies while remaining united by Blak women’s leadership as custodians, connectors and community makers.
